The Chairman, Umuahia North Local Government Area, Mr. Ugochukwu Njinkonye, has advised Cocoa farmers in the State to step up their farming activities, describing Cocoa as an important cash crop both in the State and entire nation.
Mr. Njinkonye who made the statement when he played host to members of the State Chapter of Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria, also described as commendable, the contributions of Cocoa products in the area of Internally Generated Revenue of the State.
The Umuahia North Council Boss promised to support them and advised them to continue speaking with one voice.
Earlier in an address, the State Chairman of Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria, Mr. John Kalu, called for more encouragement in the area of incentives and processing of their products by Government and pleaded with Mr. Njinkonye to assist them in the area of publicity as they plan to hold a state wide enlightenment meeting soon.
He said they are prepared to partner Umuahia North to raise Cocoa seedlings and strain Cocoa farmers on the best practices in Cocoa production and equally appealed to the Chairman to assist Cocoa farmers in the area through opening access roads to their farms.
In a vote of thanks, the State Secretary of Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Ndudim Ikelue thanked Mr. Njinkonye for his time and called on both Local and State Governments to lend more support to Cocoa farmers.
