Fire Police.

The Federal Government at the weekend said it would consider creation of a fire police to address challenges often faced by firefighters during operations across the country.

Minister of Interior, Rauf Areghesola represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Shuaib Belfore, who disclosed this during the opening ceremony of the National Council  on fire in Jos, Plateau State said the ministry would initiate the process of repealing the 1963 Fire Service Act and  ensure enactment of a new contemporary, vibrant, and enforceable law, through the instrument of an Executive Bill to be forwarded to the National Assembly for deliberation and eventual passage into law. 

He noted that the fire police would prevent Mob action and vandalization of fire-fighting assets particularly during fire outbreaks, while explaining that if it would be an arm-bearing unit to be referred to as a “Fire Police”, whose duty would be to provide needed protection during operations.
