The Federal Operations Unit zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service said it recorded a total of one hundred and forty-four seizures with a duty paid value of three point three million Naira in June 2021 and arrested twenty-three suspects in connection with the smuggled items.
The Area controller, Usman Bello Yahaya said the smuggled items were ferried into the country through unapproved routes by criminals who are hell bent on sabotaging the nation’s economy.
To unravel the issues around tax evasion and multiple tax identification number (TIN) , the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has urged the federal Inland Revenue Service to carry out a comprehensive tax audit.
NEITI, in its 2019 audit report, urged FIRS to work with the Ministry of Mines and steel Development (MMSD) to reconcile the multiple TIN and recommended that the Government through the Ministry should promote the development of minerals through investments in strategic and metallic minerals to boost revenue.
