Turkish court hands civil rights activist Osman Kavala life sentence

A Turkish Court has sentenced an activist and philanthropist, Mr. Osman Kavala to life in prison, in a case that Turkey’s international allies said is politically motivated.

Reports say Mr. Kavala was found guilty of charges related to the nationwide protests in 2013 and the failed coup attempt in 2016.

Mr. Kavala, who has already spent more than four Years in prison without being convicted, denied the charges and accused the government of judicial assassination.

Meanwhile, the European Court of Human Rights, says there is insufficient evidence that Mr. Kavala committed an offence, adding that his arrest is an attempt to silence him and dissuade other human rights defenders.
