A Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mass Communication ABSU, Dr. Paschal Ihechi, has described public relations as a multifaceted profession that should be devoid of all comers affair.
Delivering a lecture titled disturbing issues in Public Relations Practice in Nigeria at the monthly meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations Abia State Chapter, Dr. Ihechi whose lecture was delivered through a Senior Lecturer in the Department Mrs. Rose Madumere maintained that Professionalism is acquired through training, arguing that working in a media organization does not make someone a public relations practitioner.
He maintained that Public Relations has ethics, while a practitioner must acquire training and certificates, registering that most public relations organizations are now interested in membership drive rather than professionalism.
Dr. Ihechi noted that the work of Public Relations Personnel in an organization include planning and strategizing, pointing out that Public Relations Department should be part of decision making in any organization.
He pointed out that maintaining organizational reputation is very important through purposeful communication, writing skills, and use of appropriate message, appraisal, use of media, explaining that a public relations, expert must be technologically inclined as well as make use of social and conventional media.
In a vote of thanks the State Chairman Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and Director General BCA, Sir Anyaso Anyaso, thanked the lecturer for the knowledge driven lecture, pointing out that the lecture series was to build the capacity of the Public Relations Practitioners and members of the Institute for enhanced service delivery in their respective organizations.
