Government at all levels have been called upon to support and protect Journalists in their daily reportage.
Delivering a Lecture on the topic Journalism Under Siege during this year’s Press Freedom Day Celebration Organized by Nigeria Union of Journalists Abia State Council held at NUJ Press Centre,Aba Road Umuahia, the Head Department of Mass Communication Gregory University Uturu, Dr Uwaoma Uche who noted that it is a pipe dream to assume that Journalism media operate without Government control, restrictions or censorship, enjoined genuine civil society groups to continue to fight for press freedom.
Dr Uche called on conventional Journalists as a matter of urgency to endeavor to get trained in digital Journalism for effective Service delivery.
Speaking, a former SSG, Pastor Ralph Egbu, a former Chairman NUJ Abia State Council Comrade Hyacinth Okoli, permanent secretary Bureau of common service and service monitoring, Deacon Uzoma Isiakpu and former Permanent Secretary in the state Sir Chimdi Oluoha called on Journalists to be more Professional and `shun taking sides in Political issues and described the role of Journalists in nation building as critical.
Also Speaking a former president NUJ Zone C Sir Ambrose Nwachukwu , a former state chairman of NUJ, Comrade Ogbonnaya Iheaka and the Station Manager FLO FM Umuahia Comrade Samson Eze advised Journalists to embrace the use of the new media in order to enthrone professionalism in the social media.
Correspondent Simeon Kalu reports that the event which featured good will messages also attracted the presence of Immediate past Chief of Staff to the Governor, Professor A. C. B. Agbazuere who chaired the event and Journalists across the state.
