Spain dismisses spy chief in Pegasus phone spyware scandal

The first woman to head Spain’s CNI Intelligence agency, Paz Esteban, has lost her job in a deepening scandal over phone-hacking software found on the phones of top politicians.

Reports say Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, two other ministers and eighteen Catalan separatists were all targeted by Pegasus software.

According to the reports, the controversial software has been used to access the phones of prominent figures around the world.

But Mr. Sanchez was the first leader to be confirmed as a target. Defence Minister Margarita Robel, who was herself a victim of phone-hack, said the government had decided to remove the spy chief, who has been with the CNI for almost forty years.
