A Senior lecturer, in the department of Mass Communication, Abia State University Uturu, Dr. Pascal Ihechu, has identified conscience as a major element that ensures listening, for effective communication.
Delivering a lecture titled,” Listening, for effective communication: A Christian way of Building Confidence Through Social Interaction”, at the Bishop Anthony Nwedo pastoral Center, to mark the end of the World Communication Day celebration, by Catholic Media Practitioners of Nigeria Dr. Ihechu noted that communication makes a demand on the receiver, in terms of emotional preference or rejection of message.
He disclosed that listening is not the same as hearing, rather it means trying to understand the meaning of what we hear.
In an address, The Director of Social Communications, Catholic Diocese of Umuahia, The Rev. Fr. Leonard Ehiemere, said the program is structured as a means of engaging all the Church members as well as Communication experts to proffer opinions and strategies that could help to integrate media literacy among society.
In his remarks, The Chairman, Catholic Media Practitioners of Nigeria, Umuahia Diocese, Sir Chimdi Oluoha, opined that media literacy is necessary to enable members of the public to know how to relate to the various media contents for the benefit of society.
Discussing on the paper, the Education Secretary, Catholic Diocese of Umuahia, The Rev. Fr. Tobias Ukeh, Prof. Damian Asawalam of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and a Prof of History at Abia State University, Uturu, Prof. Paul Mbakwe, observed that students no longer pay attention, stressing that there are sociological theories associated with listening, and added that language of peace should be the watchword when communicating.
Correspondent Chinyere lheanacho Egbulam reports that the D.G BCA, Sir Anyaso Anyaso represented by the Director, News and Current Affairs Department, Comrade Hyacinth Okoli, among other media personnel attended the lecture.
