Para athletes from the State Sports Council engaged themselves in series of para sporting activities at the maiden Abia Para-Games 2022 which took place yesterday at the Umuahia township stadium.

Declaring the event open, the Acting State Director of Sports, Mr. Christian Ejinwa said the programme was an opportunity to showcase ability in disability, describing the NGO that partnered the Sports Council in organizing the event as pacesetters in nation building.

Mr. Ejinwa who thanked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for giving the Sports Council the approval to host the program in conjunction with Organization for Impact and Reform, OFIAR,paid tribute to wife of the Governor, Dr. Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu for her support for para sports and athletes.

In his speech, the Director of Operations, OFIAR Mr.Kingsley Ekejiuba said the organization which is made of voluntary and like minded individuals at home and abroad decided to use the program to reach out to the physically challenged community and give them a sense of belonging.

Mr. Ekejiuba also stated that the para athletes who participated in the event will receive medals and prizes and appreciated the state sports council for the robust partnership.
Correspondent Chimere Onyema reports that athletes took part in different games including para table tennis, para badminton, para power lifting, and para athletics.
