In commemoration of the 2022 world SME Day, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has presented startup funds ranging from two hundred and fifty thousand Naira to seven hundred and fifty thousand Naira each to ten Abia youths who were selected for their brilliant business proposals.

Speaking at the event held at Michael Okpara auditorium Umuahia, Governor Ikpeazu said his government has encouraged over one thousand businesses since 2015 and promised that his administration will continue to support more businesses as Abia is the SME capital of Nigeria

He stated that he made SME one of the cardinal pillars of his government  because Abians are gifted in SME, pointing out that idea, funding and patronage are essential in SME development.

The Governor recalled, that between 2015 and today, Abia has consistently won national awards in the SME sub- sector and appreciated an awardee from Abia Mr Tochukwu Clinton Chukwueke who emerged the Access bank overall MSME of the year award with the sum of One million Naira.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Lady Adaku Oseiza pointed out that Abia has been in forefront in SME development asseen in its setting up of the Enyimba Automated Shoe  Factory, and the SME bank which helps small businesses to thrive.

She noted that Abians have consistently won various categories of MSME annual awards, sponsored by the office of the Vice President, stressing that Abia SME under Governor Ikpeazu has made progress and could eminently pass the international best practices parameter set up by the United Nations.

Our Government House correspondent Ezechukwu Adimoha reports that the ceremony witnessed goodwill messages from stakeholders in the SME sector, including the manager Abia Microfinance Bank and representative of SMEDAN while the Governor later unveiled the first Abia SME business directory.
