The Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu says his administration will support the efforts of the National Root Crops Research Institute, NRCRI Umudike in cassava seed entrepreneur, root and tuber crops research development among other Agricultural value chains. 

Governor Ikpeazu who gave the assurance while declaring open the 2022 Annual Research Review and Planning Workshop with the theme “Up-scaling

Research on Root and Tuber Crops for Enhanced Food Security and Economic Empowerment” held at NRCRI Complex Hall Umudike,described Agricultural Empowerment as key to enhancing food security.

He commended the Acting Executive Director National Root Crop Research Institute, NRCRI Umudike, Dr. Godwin Asumugha and his management team for their giant efforts in Agricultural research development and extension activities on root and tuber crops.

In his address, the Acting Executive Director, National Root Crops Research Institute Umudike, Dr. Godwin Asumugha said the Institute through its partnership with IITA under the BASIC one Project has created a Community of seed entrepreneurs in cassava processing and decentralized vine multipliers in sweet potato value chains.

Dr. Asumugha noted that, the Institute has received a National recognition as the best in improved and certified seed entrepreneurs,root and crops research development programmes and other Agricultural value chains.

In his Keynote Address, the President Agricultural Policy Research Network Abuja, Dr Anthony Ojonimi-Onoja noted that climate change,land degradation, conflict and insurgence has continued to mar global food security and enjoined farmers to place more emphasis on Agricultural development research for food sufficiency.

In their remarks the Chairman on the occasion Prof. Jude Njoku,Vice Chancellor Michael Okpara University of Agriculture MOUAU Umudike, Prof Maduebibisi Iweh represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Prof Udo Herbert and Provost Federal College of Agriculture, Isiagu ,Ebony State, Dr Okechukwu Okoronkwo, commended NRCRI, Umudike on its efforts in  research development especially in areas of promoting, processing and utilizing improved varieties,farm inputs, cassava stem entrepreneur,root and tuber crops, inputs and food security.

The event which attracted the presence of the Representative of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr. Mohammed Abubakar, Chairman Ikwuano Local Government Area, Chief Stephen Mpamugo, Traditional Rulers and Stakeholders in Agricultural sector also featured crops exhibition and good will messages.
