GOVERNOR IKPEAZU STRESSES NEED FOR STATES TO ENACT SAFETY LAWS.

The Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has stressed the need for states to enact safety laws.

Governor Ikpeazu who stated this at his investiture as the ‘’Most Distinguished Professional Fellow’’ by the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria held in Umuahia, described the safety of Abia residents as one of the cardinal objectives of his administration.

The Governor represented by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dr. EzeChikamnayo, thanked the Institute for the honour done him and promised that the state government will assist to ensure smooth operation of safety laws in the state.

He noted that Governor Ikpeazu has constructed one hundred and fifty quality roads across the state to ensure the safety of Abians on the road, pointing out that work is going on in earnest at Azikiwe Road, Aba.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Works, Dr. Bob Ogu, represented by the Public relations officer of the Ministry, Mrs. Blessing Uche, said the State Ministry of Works is happy to be part of the epoch making event because of the importance of safety in carrying out the mandates of the Ministry.

Contributing, the Vice Chancellor, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Professor Madu ebibisiIwe represented by Professor Herbert Ude, said the University will partner the Institute to realize its mandate and congratulated the Abia Chapter on their successful Inauguration.

In their remarks, the President, Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, Pastor EvaristusUzamere and the Zonal Coordinator for Abia, Anambra and Ebonyi States, Chief Ignatius Achilike, said the Institute is big enough to accommodate those with the right qualification, work experience and ethics and expressed happiness that Abia Chapter has finally been inaugurated.

Presenting his address, the Acting Coordinator, institute of Safety professionals of Nigeria, Abia State Chapter, Henry Uzoma, said the Institute established in 1960 remains the foremost National Safety Professional Regulatory body in Africa and chartered in 2014, with a mandate to set standards and collaborate with relevant Agencies of government to regulate the training and practice of safety management in Nigeria.

He thanked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for doing a quality job to ensure the safety of Abians as well as coming to identify with them.

Correspondent, Chukwuma Emele reports that others honoured at the ceremony include Commissioner for Works, Dr. Bob Ogu, Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, Chief Jerry Uzosike, Vice Chancellor, MOUA, Professor Maduebibisi Iwe, among others.
