The wife of the Governor, Dr. Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu, has charged nursing mothers to exclusively breastfeed their babies for their good health and adequate growth.
Dr. Mrs. Ikpeazu who gave the charge at the flag-off of the 2022 Baby Friendly and World Breast Feeding Weekin the State held at Mgboko headquarters of Obingwa LocalGovernment Area, said the event done annually is to draw the attention of the populace to the benefits of breast feeding of infants by their mothers.
The wife of the Governor disclosed that there are many benefits of breast feeding including best nutrition for babies, reduction of weight of nursing mothers and of risk of breast and ovarian cancer, noting that the present government attaches great importance to quality healthcare of Abians, hence, the upgrading of health facilities in the State.
She called on employers especially Ministries, Parastatals and the organized private sector to provide a unit where nursing mothers can breast feed their babies.
In his speech, the Executive Secretary, Abia State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Chinagozie Adindu, said exclusive breast feeding is one of the best ways of reducing Infant and Maternal Mortality and commended Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for equipping health centres with modern equipment and qualified personnel for services to the public.
In her remarks, the Chairman, Obingwa Local Government Area, Mrs. Uloma Wogu, thanked Governor Ikpeazu and his wife for their efforts in providing quality health programmes in the state and assured of the support of Obingwa people to their leadership.
Speaking, the State Focal Person, Baby Friendly Initiative, Mrs. Queenet Ginikanwa Erondu, urged the nursing mothers to utilize the teachings they received during their antenatal and in the World Breast Feeding event in the state to breast feed their babies adequately.
Responding on behalf of the nursing mothers, Mrs. Loveth Chinedu, thanked the State Government for the programme and assured that they will sensitize others on the benefits of breast feeding.
