DEADLY FUNGAL INFECTION RAVAGES US.
A deadly fungal infection Candida auris that is hard to treat is spreading rapidly at an alarming rate.
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, which stated this says the US cases nearly doubled in 2021 from seven hundred and fifty-six to one thousand, four hundred and seventy-one.
The CDC disclosed that healthy people are not at risk of Candida auris but those with weak immune systems or using medical devices like ventilators or catheters can suffer the severe illness or die.
However, the CDC data which was published in the Annals of internal medicine said the infection was first reported in the US in 2016 while the most rapid rise in cases was from 2020 to 2021.
Meanwhile, the CDC has attributed the rise to poor infection prevention at healthcare facilities and enhanced screening efforts.
